What is Share Code Check?

A share code check is a verification process used by UK employers to confirm a job applicant’s or employee’s right to work in the country. The share code is a unique, time-limited alphanumeric code generated by the individual through the UK government’s online immigration status service at gov.uk.

Why Share Code Check Matters

To complete the check, the employer enters the share code along with the applicant’s date of birth on the government’s online checking service. The system then displays the individual’s immigration status and confirms whether they are permitted to work, along with any restrictions on the type or hours of employment allowed.

Employers are legally required to conduct right to work checks before employment begins. Using the share code system ensures compliance with UK immigration law and provides a statutory excuse against penalties for employing someone without the legal right to work.
