Shift Differential

What is Shift Differential?

A shift differential is a premium added to an employee’s standard hourly rate as compensation for working shifts that fall outside normal business hours. Evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts commonly qualify for differential pay because they are generally considered less desirable.

Why Shift Differential Matters

The amount of the differential is typically expressed as a percentage of the base rate or as a flat dollar amount per hour. For example, an employer might offer an additional 10 percent for evening shifts and 15 percent for overnight shifts. Shift differential policies vary widely by industry and are especially common in healthcare, manufacturing, retail, and public safety.

Offering competitive shift differentials helps employers attract and retain staff for hard-to-fill schedules. HR teams should ensure that differentials are clearly documented in compensation policies and accurately reflected in payroll calculations, including overtime computations where applicable.
