What is Underwriter?

An underwriter is a professional who evaluates and assesses the risk of insuring a particular group or individual and determines the terms and pricing of coverage. In employee benefits, underwriters analyse factors such as group demographics, claims history, industry risk, and plan design to set premium rates for employer-sponsored health, life, and disability plans. The underwriting process determines whether a group is accepted for coverage, at what price, and under what conditions. Understanding underwriting helps HR professionals negotiate better terms during benefits renewals.
