Motivational Theories
What is Motivational Theories?
Motivational theories are frameworks that explain what drives human behaviour and how organisations can create conditions that encourage employees to perform at their best. Key theories in HR include Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory, Vroom’s Expectancy Theory, McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y, and Deci and Ryan’s Self-Determination Theory. These models inform how organisations design jobs, structure compensation, provide feedback, and create work environments that sustain employee engagement. Understanding motivational theories helps HR professionals develop people strategies grounded in established psychological principles.
