Hierarchy of Needs
What is Hierarchy of Needs?
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a motivational theory that arranges human needs in a five-level pyramid, from basic physiological requirements to self-actualisation. The levels, from bottom to top, are physiological, safety, social belonging, esteem, and self-actualisation. In the workplace, this model suggests that employees must have their fundamental needs met before they can be motivated by higher-order factors such as recognition and personal growth. HR professionals apply this framework when designing compensation, benefits, workplace safety measures, team-building initiatives, and career development programmes.
