What is Bereavement Leave?

Bereavement leave is a type of time off that employers provide to employees following the death of a close family member or loved one. It gives the employee space to grieve, attend funeral or memorial services, and manage any necessary personal or legal affairs during a difficult period.

Why Bereavement Leave Matters

The length and terms of bereavement leave vary by employer, as there is no US federal law requiring private employers to offer it. Many company policies grant between three and five days of paid leave for immediate family members, with shorter allowances for extended family. Some organizations also extend bereavement leave to cover the loss of close friends or domestic partners.
