What is XML/HR-XML?

XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a standard format for structuring and exchanging data between systems, and HR-XML is a set of XML-based standards specifically designed for human resources data. Developed by the HR Open Standards Consortium, HR-XML provides standardised schemas for exchanging information related to recruiting, payroll, benefits, time and attendance, and other HR processes. These standards enable interoperability between different HR software systems, reducing the need for custom integrations. While newer data formats like JSON have gained popularity, HR-XML remains relevant in established enterprise systems and regulatory reporting.
