Mean Wage

What is Mean Wage?

The mean wage is the average wage calculated by dividing the total wages paid to a group of workers by the number of workers in that group. In compensation analysis, the mean wage provides a broad measure of pay levels for a particular role, occupation, or labour market. However, it can be skewed by extremely high or low values, which is why it is often used alongside the median wage for a more complete picture. HR professionals use mean wage data from sources such as the Bureau of Labor Statistics and salary surveys to benchmark compensation and ensure market competitiveness.
