Gross Pay

What is Gross Pay?

Gross pay represents the full compensation an employee earns before taxes, insurance premiums, retirement contributions, and other deductions are subtracted. For hourly workers, gross pay is calculated by multiplying the hourly rate by the number of hours worked, including any overtime. For salaried employees, it is typically the annual salary divided by the number of pay periods.

Why Gross Pay Matters

Understanding gross pay is important for both employers and employees. It serves as the starting point for calculating net pay, or take-home pay, and is used on tax forms and financial documents. HR and payroll teams must accurately compute gross pay each period to ensure correct withholdings and compliance with wage and tax laws.
