What is Discrimination?

Discrimination in the workplace occurs when an employee or applicant is treated unfavourably because of a protected characteristic such as race, colour, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or genetic information. Discrimination can be direct, where someone is explicitly treated less favourably, or indirect, where a seemingly neutral policy disproportionately disadvantages a particular group. Employment discrimination is prohibited by various federal laws including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
