Cultural Web Model
What is Cultural Web Model?
The cultural web model, developed by Gerry Johnson and Kevan Scholes in 1992, is a framework for analysing and understanding the culture of an organisation. It identifies six interrelated elements — stories, rituals and routines, symbols, organisational structures, control systems, and power structures — that together form the cultural paradigm, or the lived experience of working within a company.
Why Cultural Web Model Matters
HR professionals use the cultural web to diagnose how these elements reinforce or undermine desired workplace behaviours. By mapping out each component, organisations can identify cultural strengths to preserve and areas that need to shift in order to support strategic goals, improve employee engagement, or navigate change effectively.
