What is Competency Modelling?

Competency modelling is the process of identifying and defining the specific knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviours required for successful performance in a given role or organisation. A competency model provides a structured framework that informs recruitment, performance management, training and development, succession planning, and career pathing. Models typically distinguish between core competencies that apply across the organisation, functional competencies specific to a department or discipline, and leadership competencies required at management levels. Well-designed competency models are aligned with the organisation’s strategy and regularly updated to reflect evolving business needs.
